Hey yall, we’ve chosen a date for our next gathering:
Thursday, July 14th at 6pm!
For this session we’re reading Grecian poet and lyricist, Sappho of Lesbos! We plan to put her work in concert with the work of poet Emily Dickinson. We’re less than a month out, so now is a good time to get started reading some poetry!
If you’d like to have a laugh and to learn a little more about Sappho, may I suggest this SNL skit:
And now, Emily Dickinson— as John Green says in this 10 minute long Crash Course video “These poems have a lot to say about the relationship between death and life, between faith and doubt, between the power of God, and the power of individuals. So, let’s focus on that because it might actually change your life and stuff.”
We’d love for you to read Anne Carson’s Sappho translation. The poems are all fragmentary which makes it a quick read.
If Not, Winter | Fragments of Sappho - Anne Carson
For Emily Dickinson, our friends Lucy and Andy have put together this amazing packet of poems to peruse.
Please RSVP using the poll above to let us know if we can expect you. This time we’ll be doing dinner potluck style. The theme?
New England + Grecian Picnic!
Think light summery finger foods you’d eat by the beach - kettle chips, mini lobster rolls, lemonade, feta + watermelon salad, and ice cream sandwiches! More details on that closer to our meeting date.
Really looking forward to this Gap Year Session!
